Background

St John's College was founded in 1898 in Johannesburg and is primarily a boys' school for students in Grades 0 to 12. Students follow the South African curriculum up to the National Senior Certificate examinations in Grade 12. There is also a Sixth Form which admits both girls and boys to study toward A-Levels. The school has a prestigious history with strong Anglican traditions, and pupils attend chapel every morning.

St John's has a strong sporting tradition comparable to the best English boarding schools, with excellent facilities including an Astroturf field, a rowing clubhouse and a heated water polo pool. Extra-curricular activities include favourite South African sports such as rugby, as well as golf, rowing and basketball.

Curriculum

The school follows the IEB South African curriculum and boys study toward the IEB National Senior Certificate in Grade 12. There is also a co-educational Sixth Form where students follow the British curriculum, preparing for Cambridge A-Level examinations.
